PBY means (so I was told) Patrol Boat and the Y was the designator for the Consolidated aircraft company.

I always found the US designations confusing and much prefer names. The F-4 was a Corsair or was it a Phantom? The invader was A-26 then it was a B-26 which was also a Marauder. Probably fine at the time they were used, but confusing when researching.

The Invader was the A26 and the Marauder was the B26. As for the Corsair, the propeller one indeed the F4 under the then US Navy designations. The Phantom was the F110 under the US Navy designations but in the early 60s the Department of Defence(as I spell it!) went over to having just one designator for aircraft types and it became the F4.

It will be interesting to see if it is shown on a future BBC2 Saving Lives at Sea series. I presume they have the cameras fitted to the lifeboats all the time?
