That was a rhetorical question, and some will say off topic. But dont forget MOD chartered quite a few ships in the Falklands war as troopships. And of course the Belfasts!

Ah the Belfast, first love of my life and despite the expense another short sighted decision to get rid of it, popular rumour has it all the savings were lost in the hire fees for the Falklands conflict!!

I posted some Belfast pics under the Muharraq thread a couple of years ago.

Presumably the hiring of commercial transports come under a different budget so when the PAC asks about the money spent on service aircraft the result is always good, as long as they don't ask a sensible question! Similarly the UK is run by contractors and temps so they don't appear on the headcount or payroll. In both cases they are a false economy, usually by shed loads of money! Never sure who is fooling who.

The MOD has always used contracted aircraft, anyone remember Britannia airways and the 737s doing the trooping flights to Germany?

I remember the 'Smith Air' desk at Luton where you'd get checked in by a couple of squaddies in blazers and slacks as opposed to all the other desks where there were more attractive people. I think the idea was that it wouldn't stand out as a target for republicans, but there were so many lads with green hold-alls strewn about the place you couldn't mistake it for anything other than what it was.
