Aberdeen Press and Journal - Wednesday 03 August 1938CONCRETE SHELTERS
Aberdeen may become a centre for the manufacture of concrete air raid shelters. Messrs Trollope and Colls, who a few years ago established a factory at Craig-shaw for concrete pipes, which are being largely used in the main drainage scheme, have made plans for the production of the shelters if there is a demand for them in the North-east.
A sample section is on view at Craigshaw.
The method of manufacture is simple. There are two types—cylindrical and arch shaped—and they are cast in moulds.
Their purpose is to give protection from bomb splinters and gas. The degree of protection is governed by the depth to which they are placed in the ground.
GASPROOF DOOR
The shelter is simply a house in the ground, with a thick layer of earth on top to give additional protection. Admission is obtained by reinforced concrete stairs. A gasproof door restricts the entry of contaminated air. Being built on the pre- cast sectional principle, the shelter can constructed to any desired size.
An emergency exit is provided and is fitted with an easily removed manhole cover.
The cylindrical type can be made with a diameter of up to 7ft. 6in., while the arch type has a width of 6ft. and a height of 6ft. 6in.
With a mechanical gas filter ventilation system in operation, twenty-five persons, it is claimed, can be accommodated in comfort for an indefinite period in shelter 23ft. 6in. long. Without ventilation there would be accommodation for ten persons for a maximum of six hours. Provision is made for the chamber being lit by electric light. In the event of failure of the current the motor generator can be operated by hand.
