UK Airfields - ICAO codes

Some others seem to have national codes. I wonder if it was just that the UK, USA etc were first to set up "airports" and just allocated national codes to them then as others followed , it was decided to use an Antarctica code?

To allocate USA location indicators, they just take the IATA 3 letter designator and add 'K' as a prefix.

Canada adds a C at the beginning to its IATA codes to get its ICAO codes.

Off course being pedantic only the 48 mainland states are covered by the K prefix. Alaska and Hawaii have P as their prefix letter.
