Heliport Locations

Southampton Heliport-operated by Twyford Moors Helicopters was within Southampton Dock gates at approx N50,54.1W 001.24.58.

There was a hangar and a rudimentary control box.

The whole area has been redeveloped over the past 30 years(roads realigned etc) so to give you an exact position is difficult except to say it was IIRC between Southern Road and Solent Road and to the north of the( now demolished) Rank Building.(Postal address was West Quay Road).

If you look at the area in Google Earth it was approximately where you can see a car park to the N of Solent Road
Even then - imported helos were rigged on the quayside ( rather than at the heliport)and flown out.

The premises at Chestnut Ave in Eastleigh did have a pad which was used only occasionally.
The company went into liquidation in the summer of 1975 and both premises were closed down .

Some additional background re Fleetlands ....

When the Navy still had large numbers of fixed wing aircraft and carriers... when a carrier arrived at Pompey with u/s aircraft on board they were offloaded and lightered to Fleetlands from where they were towed by road to Lee-on-Solent. They were towed down Fareham Rd. ,and then along Rowner Road.
When Rowner Road was re aligned in the early 50s (when the housing estates each side were being started... the new lamp posts etc were especially positioned in order to allow plenty of width for the frequent aircraft towing operations.

There's the one at Penzance, SW 486313.

I also have heard of one, which no longer exists, at Fort William in the area of NN 105744, now the site of the college, supermarket and petrol station. It was marked on older maps with an H.

There is also one in Glasgow, used mainly by the Strathclyde Police helicopter but also by some others.

A little more about Twyford Moors Helicopters place at Eastleigh- actual location was west of the present motorway , on the north side of Chestnut Ave, between Falkland Rd and Chestnut Close.
