In my day(boy does that make me feel old!) we used aldis lamps and very pistols for non radio aircraft.

Are the signals as used on the square still taught? If so that may be the reason. What do aircraft without radio do? Ah , used the mobile phone and text the tower :) - I wonder if that has ever happened?


Aircraft with a failed main radio use the stand-by radio....:)

Thats right squawk 7600, radio failure. If its the pilots microphone thats US then use the speechless procedure.

Would they have used the runway number in a signal square?

if you look a the 1940s shot of MH the 04 on the cupola on the roof is a runway number and this is where they were shown. That 29 would have been put up there.
signal squares would contain lots of info. Land on grass/land on tarmac/ which direction/ dont land/and other warning signs.
