Just for info:
I made this signal square for the Coningsby I made for my flight sim, having seen a photo here www.controltowers.co.uk/C/Coningsby.htm . The problem is my inability to as yet make a red square & dumbells. The background colour I used really stands out at 3000 ft too, & didn't look black in the original photo.

Interesting to see that the runway headings/directions (painted in yellow, contained within the yellow square), are indicated within the square, presumably so that the 'erk' requested to move to the appropriate runway would know which directrion to change it to.
Not a feature i believe that was on wartime airfields.
