Thanks for this Richard, nice to see the tulips which are a common link with Canada, In the autumn of 1945, Princess Juliana of the Netherlands presented Ottawa with 100,000 tulip bulbs in appreciation for the safe haven that members of Dutch royal family received during the World War II in Ottawa and in recognition of the role which Canadian troops played in the liberation of the Netherlands. The tulips are widely know to celibrate the birth or Princess Margriet who, was probably only royal baby ever born in North America. To ensure her Dutch citizenship, the Canadian government ceded a room at the Ottawa Civic Hospital to the Netherlands which allowed the baby to be born a Dutch citizen on Dutch soil in the safe haven of Canada.
I will as soon as I can get around to it add the CWGC cemetery onto my website. I was in Harrogate visiting my son and his family last Easter and did a great visit to RAF Riccal. The next day I passed the cemetery and saw it was a CWGC.
Then I realised it was the main cemetery for Canadians in Yorkshire. I was given Heroes of Bomber Command Yorkshire, a very good book but boy the casualty lists after a night over Germany And this went on night after night. No wonder Harrogate CWGC cemetery is so large.
