Airfield/Aircraft Books WW2

Hi

Dropped into a charity bookshop today and picked up:

• Britain's Military Airfields 1935-1945
• Action Stations: Vols 1, 2 & 5
• United States Military Aircraft since 1909

- all for a couple of pounds each. Delighted!

That sounds like my kind of charity shop ! Thats a good buy.

That's right. "United States Military Aircraft since 1909" - Gordon Swanborough and Peter M Bowers: Putnam. Really nice condition.

Just picked up another few books (not cheap!) to build up my library:

• British Military Airfield Architecture

Any recommendations for "must have" reference/reading books for WW2 aviation history?

You have picked up two of the must haves above, have you got the Willis & Hollis yet? Thats one of my most used books.

Also, I'd very high reccommend ARG Membership - the quarterly magazine is a must have!!!

Depends where your specific interests lie,
For the USAAF I would recommend 'Airfields of the Eighth-Then and now' 'The Mighty Eighth' and 'The Mighty Eighth War Diaries' The first is an After the Battle book from the 1970's but in conjunction with Roger Freeman who wrote the other two I listed. 'Airfields of the Ninth', again by Roger Freeman. An Illusrated history of the RAF- Roy Conyers Nesbit, a little difficult , but there are sooooooo many books out there. I'm sure recommendations on here will no doubt come thick and fast:)

If I was made to get rid of every book and only keep one it would be my original edition of the Air Mins 'RAF Works' (AP 3236) without a shadow of a doubt.
It is the bible IMHO.

I find that the third member of the Mighty Eighth trilogy is the best - 'Might Eighth War Manual'
