Archaeology in the Fens,serious implications for airfields

I can't see any posts on this subject yet so I hope I'm putting it in the right place.

Obviously this has serious implications for airfields in the Fens.

Councillors are elected, councils are full of local authority employees earning a nice wage for really doing very little.

I agree Paul,unfortunately local govenment tends to attract his ilk. It will be interesting to see the outcome to all this as it will no doubt have an impact on a wider area in future.

Well yes but - sadly this is the inevitable result of planning legislation having swung way too far in prioritising archaeology over pretty much anything with regard to planning, and also with the way in which archaeology has come to be funded. We got the balance wrong when this legislation was introduced in the early 1990s. It came about as a result of both occasional unscrupulous developers, and the need to reduce the cost burden of archaelogoy on Local Authorities (county level) who at the time were funding all archaeological digs in their patch.

One might not agree with either the content or the way he said it, but there must be a reason why he said it. Are there any professional archaeologists out there who are prepared to admit the system is flawed and needs an overhaul? I can think of better ways to achieve a much more balanced aproach to archaeology and development - which would, I believe, better serve the cause of archaeology.

Archaeology has got b*gger all to do with politics(national or local), and it is a great shame when it is occasionally dragged into bed with the latter.

It's very easy to think that isn't it? A worrying article indeed and will no doubt have councillors up and down the land rubbing their greedy hands with glee - if one Council manages to have such a proposed ruling voted through its Chambers, bet your bottom dollar others will cite it as a test case to help their own development schemes. Allegedly, of course.
