Help needed locating abandoned airfields..

Members of this forum who are familiar with my occasional posts will know that my specific interest lies with wartime airfields within a 'landscape' photography context. This is a project that I would like to see through to fruition (quite what that fruit will be I am not yet sure) but I am frustrated by lack of available time away from work.

I am trying to find former airfields that possess the increasingly elusive abandoned, 'ghostfield' atmosphere but which also possess some structures and/or concrete runway or taxiway. I live in Essex Marauder country, and nearby Willingale and Matching are variously rewarding in these respects. Lavenham and Rivenhall also offer interest. Upottery in Devon is the ideal 'ghostfield', and I would hope to get to Davidstow Moor before it becomes a windfarm. However, many days out in East Anglia have been wasted. All too many, such as Shipdham, Rougham and Swannerton are blighted by industrial sites, others that might otherwise have been promising such as Langham, Oulton and Attlebridge have only retained their runways by virtue of decidely unpicturesque turkey and pig sheds. Most of Norfolk seems anyway to be covered in 'keep out' signs. Many airfields such as Ridgewell and Kimbolton have all but vanished from the landscape. Others, such as Halesworth, are even now being wiped away before I can get to them.

I appreciate that due to the vast numbers of former airfields it is a tall order, but many forum members have visited (and photographed) large numbers of these sites. Google Earth indicates that the East Midlands (Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Notts, Lincs) have reasonable quantities of extant structures and concrete, but whether they offer the 'moodiness' for which I am searching I don't know. Time is so tight to get useful shots (the lansdscape photographers 'magic hour' in the morning and evening further limit it) that any tips, hints or pointers that might help me would be most gratefully received. Obviously, East Anglia is easiest for me, but really any thoughts would be welcome.

Raydon, Suffolk and Wymeswold, Leicestershire may be worth a visit.

I too vouch for Wymeswold Toby, to say the place 'blew me away' would be an understatement! If you do venture up there in the winter (the only season for airfield trips;-)) I would be more than happy to share the journey with you.

Wymeswold is brilliant & then there's my favourite Desborough.

Upwood may be worth considering, there are buildings a plenty that haven't been industrialised and you also have the "big" fen skies around you as well.

These are afew i would say may have what you are after interms of moodiness .

Desborough on the right day is definately moody & I've not had my camera with me when it was, no modern developement makes it for me.

I almost for got Methringham you can feel the atmosphere especially on the peritract & part of the north south runway in the & late afternoon & early evening .

Thorpe Abbotts and Framlingham for me are great places for that WW2 atmosphere, neither being used for all that Cold war period. Built and used for use during the second world war only..no jets flying from either of them.
