Help needed locating abandoned airfields..

I agree about Thorpe Abbotts even to day its still got an eerie atmosephere surounding the airfield as well as the resident ghost who is seen on some ocations in the control tower when they are closing for the night . Ive even experinced the ghost my self once many years ago when i first visited Thorpe Abbotts looking around the then derolect control tower i did not hang about !

i spent 21 years working on Parham airfield (Framlingham) and it really is creepy at night. if you drive on the entrance track to the industrial Main site and park up within the first 5 yards of the entrance starting.(IN WARTIME THERE WAS A GATE HERE) then look to your left ,across the first cropfield is a wooded area. Walk down into it and bear left,it is full of bulldozed broken concrete building remains,a few ponds and bits of twisted metal. i used to walk my dog there lunchtimes and one time as we walked in the tufted grass a "thing" sprung up and ran away in front of me .it was 12 inches high approx and was pink and looked like a tiny naked man.it ran with its arms swinging. i kid you not.

Hi corij how long ago did your encounter take place & have you mentioned this to any one else ? i wonder if any of the people who run the Parham air museum have had any strange encounters on the airfield ?

10 years ago thereabouts. to put my mind at rest i later reasoned that it surely must be a squirrel with no hair ,though it ran upright and was bigger.

ive only mentioned it to friends since and have no intention of ever revisiting Parham airfield ./ its a place that once youve left it,you should not go back,if that makes sense .

One of my friends is on the staff of the Parham Tower museum. He has never seen anything out of the ordinary, I have visited several times and the place has no different feel from any other wartime airfield..and I have been to a few!
Rivenhall is a different matter!

there was a Discovry program about 10 years ago with an interview with an American chap who worked at the Parham museum, and it discussed a ghost which he had seen at the Control Tower

I have been to Parham a couple of times, but at the wrong time of day for 'moody' photos. Will go again. My daughter lives in Aldeburgh some of the time.

Anyway, please keep them coming. I am enjoying the thread immensely, and there are some good tips filtering through. These tales of strange experiences and of 'atmosphere' really do help, because thats what I am looking for.

The Great War Forum, to which I also belong, has a thread titles 'Strange Experiences on The Western Front'. On it I mentioned a very powerful sense of foreboding and of being watched that I experienced on my first ever visit to Mametz Wood in 2003. A forum member pointed out that there were 22 (I think) accounts of almost identical experiences by other members at the same location! I therefore discount nothing.

Hi horrocks glad that you find the tips useful .Dont be put off by any body who thinks that airfields & other wartime places dont have a sense
of foreboding or an atmosphere belive me they do . Bodney is an other airfield that seems to have a strange feeling to it althuogh its many years since i last visited there . Steve as actualy got pictures of an apperition on the inside staircase . Any way please keep us informed on your visits i am looking forward to reading what you discover.

Goxhill. Virtually no development on technical site but runways and tower gone. That said, it's VERY peaceful and all remaining buildings retain that "feel" and appearance.

Coleby Grange. That tower is a classic.
