Runway marker boards

Runway marker boards was created by binbrook74
After looking at several Pictures of Raf binbrook i was wondering if someone could help with the following.
The runways had marker boards placed along intervals at the side of the runways .
I would presume they were at measured length.
The pics i have seen have got 1 2 and 3 in white writing on black boards.
How is this in relation to the lenghts of the runway /Overshoot area,s.
Also binbrook use to have triangular boards placed somewhere along the side,s of the runways iirc. What did these actually mean ??
Its mainly so i can update my airfield plan with all the marker boards,Papi lights etc on it .
Thanks in advance.

RWY distance markers :
Markers were placed each 1000ft (+/-300m) from a reference point which is the end of the RWY or arrester cable/barrier.
So the figures gives you info of the available remaining distance : starteing at a maximum of '12' up to '1'
All panels were black except the last one having (n°1) in red meaning 1000ft remaining
The panels are double side with a 30% angle for good visibility : Ex : one side '1' on red and the other side '8' on black
The are located beteween 15 and 23m form the RWY edge
Figures are 1m high on a black or red panel of 1.5m by 1.5m

Hope my poor english was clear... ?

RAF use as above, but I have always had it explained to me that it's measured every thousand feet from the dominant threshold. The barrier or arrester cable position is irrelevant, many runways having distance markers without or before these were fitted.
Displaced thresholds, overrun areas and barrier areas can be any, un measured or marked distance beyond the defined threshold position, thus irrelevant for measurement.
The markers are a lightweight alloy construction, triangular section in plan, with black panels with the distance numbers cut out with a reflective white panel to clearly define the number. They aso illuminate with the runway lighting. I have never seen numbers displayed in anything but white.
In daily use we refer to them as distance to run boards.
Arrester cable positions are also marked with the same design boards but with a large yellow circle, also illuminated with the R/W lighting.

Right, measured as from the dominant threshold... !

All figures are white and panels black except for panel n° '1' which is red (warning for the last 1.000 ft of RWY).
Triangular section in plan with a 30° angle for better visibility.
The given measures for figures & panels are standard NATO as per documentation.

In Belgium, each panel had/has its own lighting.
Idem for the arrester cable board (large yellow circle)

I've never seen an RAF airfield with the last number (or any other) marked in red. The last 1000ft is marked by red lighting on the centreline.

I've never seen that style marker board (or indeed any red board) on RAF airfield, and yes certain RAF runways have centreline lighting.

The red back ground with '1' warns the pilot that the end of the RWY is nearing... just a reminder

This is NATO standard for me !

As has been said the disctance to go is based on the take off run from the threshold, never seen the red board either. The boards are what is called "frangible2 ie they will give way when hit! As for the RHAG, there is a light on the marker board that flashes should the RHAG lose tension.
