To rub things in a lot of adverts show people using all manner of screens in sunny climes without shade. I wonder if I should complain to trading standards? But then again most of these are "lifestyle" ads so have no bearing on reality.

Like the pictures of people on very bright sunny beaches using their laptop / tablets without any problems! That is where the Kindle came in useful - I used to sometimes put maps, plans, notes etc into as a convenient way to carry around to use in the field.
The Kindle is the extremes of two contrasts, black and white and lends itself to being sunlight readable whereas the digital camera screen has to reproduce the whole spectrum of colours and shades. The reason that I binned my 'smart phone' here because the screen is unreadable in even ambient light.
I see local TV and Movie crews around my area frequently. They shoot digital and the Director's monitor screen uses high technology to keep the sun and strong light off the panel with a topless beer carton masking taped to the frame:-D
Mention on Practica cameras in another thread brought back a memory of my first SLR. It was from Dixons and was a Prinzflex, however the hot sun made the plastic brand label fall off and revealed it to be a Zenit B. I took some great photos with that and bearing in mind it was totally manual with no light meter and I was using slides it was a miracle I only had 10% wastage. In later years I worked at Zenith House in Colindale and found that it was a Russian company who were based there before us and they were involved in optics and cameras. Small world.

my first real camera was a Zenith E. I think I was 15, maybe 16 and took the bus to Grantham, then the train to Nottingham handed over 20 (or was it 40?) pounds and came away with the heaviest and noisiest cameraI have ever owned. But you have to start somewhere.
