Anyone know what happened to the RAF Central Library after it left Spittlegate for Uxbridge in 1958, I understand it arrived at Uxbridge but cannot find any trace of it after 1961.
You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!
I seem to recall that the RAF Central Library was the central source of text books and so on required by the Education Section on stations in support of promotion examinations etc.
There was another important Library which I fear went to the skip, and that was the Adastral Library, obviously housed in Adastral House. When I worked in Adastral, and the adjacent Lacon House, this was an amazing port of call for access to all sorts of really interesting historical stuff. Perhaps its contents went to AHB? I hope they were saved and not just skipped.
The Central Library was at RAF Upwood when I was stationed there in 1966 & 1974; I passed it on my way to work at the Equipment Officers Training School.
I think the Adastral Library may have been absorbed into the MoD Library off Whitehall, in Gt Scotland Yard.
The word on the street (well Ruskin Avenue) is that the Central Library ceased to exist as an RAF unit on 1 October 1961, when it was disbanded and its task was absorbed by the RAF School of Education.
Before it was at Spittlegate, it was at Cosford. It ammalgamated with the Book Depot at Spittlegate which had been at Innsworth. It arrived at Spittlegate in the summer of 1955. Its ORB only runs from 1958 to October 1961.

It is quite possible that only the empty Central Library-marked building existed at Upwood by 1974 or it was a remote store; my memory is a bit hazy about an organisation I had nothing to do with.
