Interesting; I'm sure it was spelt 'al' in RAF documents in the sixties & seventies.

Oh dear. From "The Airfields of Lincolnshire Since 1912":

1917 - 1928 - Spittlegate

1928 - 1944 - Grantham

!944 - Close - Spitalgate

After having been misspelt since 1944 as "Spitalgate," the R.A.F. station of that name is to revert to the earlier, and correct, spelling of "Spittlegate." The error came to light when, recently, Viscount Sandon was passing by the Royal Air Force station outside Grantham; he noticed the name "Spitalgate" on the signboard, a spelling which eight years before had been authorized by the Air Ministry. Viscount Sandon, who had family connections in the district many years ago, and who is also a member of the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts, believed the name should be spelt Spittlegate. He was interested enough to make inquiries in the district, and these confirmed that the name had, in fact, been Spittlegate since about 1600.

This clearly didn't happen, but is a source of confusion.

The station opened in 1915 as Royal Flying Corps Station Grantham, becoming RAF Station Grantham on 1 April 1918 - a name it bore until 1942 when it was renamed as RAF Station Spitalgate.
