RAF Central Library

To Upwood in July 1964, following its subsequent trail now.

I seem to recall that the RAF Central Library was the central source of text books and so on required by the Education Section on stations in support of promotion examinations etc.

There was another important Library which I fear went to the skip, and that was the Adastral Library, obviously housed in Adastral House. When I worked in Adastral, and the adjacent Lacon House, this was an amazing port of call for access to all sorts of really interesting historical stuff. Perhaps its contents went to AHB? I hope they were saved and not just skipped.

The Central Library was at RAF Upwood when I was stationed there in 1966 & 1974; I passed it on my way to work at the Equipment Officers Training School.

I think the Adastral Library may have been absorbed into the MoD Library off Whitehall, in Gt Scotland Yard.

As the school of education went to Newton from Upwood Im guessing it was there before the school went to Halton, and Im guessing it went there.

It is quite possible that only the empty Central Library-marked building existed at Upwood by 1974 or it was a remote store; my memory is a bit hazy about an organisation I had nothing to do with.

Also, 'Spittlegate' should be 'Spitalgate'.

"RAF Spittlegate" is the official spelling from 1952 onwards, having previously been "RAF Spitalgate" and "RAF Grantham" at various times.
