From the profile it would appear to be a British Mk.I(M) moored magnetic mine, introduced in 1918 and used right up to the start of WWII.

On the other hand I haven't been to many seaside towns in the last 30 years, just the same ones over and over again. Maybe casual survey is required
I would assume that most were removed due to rust and lack of maintenance. Who installed them and maintained them?

These two are on display at the National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool . The museum was previously solely run by the local council but the National Museums of the Royal Navy came 'on board' , sorry , about two years ago and I was there when these mines arrived by road together with a 'big gun' part of which you can see in the last photograph and I'm still waiting for the museum to take a Sea Harrier on loan too !

This mine money box is on Holy Island near the Lindisfarne Priory and the Manor House Hotel is worth a visit too . Other pubs and cafes are available on the island !

From my distant youth, I remember one on the sea front at Swanage. I wonder if it is still there?

Good to see them with both parts rather than just the bit that goes bang. I now wonder if some of the many I saw as a child had the anchor part. I also wonder how many are still out there, gently swaying in the ebb and flow?
I had never noticed the small wheels before nor the tracks they must have had on board the ship. I does explain why they appeared to be launched effortlessly.
