Saw this building at RNAS St Merryn, HMS Vulture.
Never seen one like it, I was guessing synthetic trainer building of sorts, maybe torpedo or dive bombing related.
However it is located in the domestic site, would such a building exist there on FAA stations, or is it more of a gym/recreation use?

During my research I have found a number of WW2 vintage buildings on former RNAS stations which I could not identify as to function since they are different to the AM/RAF structures with which I am familiar. I suspect NP will have to get out again and write us another Military Airfield Buildings (RN only) reference book.

I have made some overtures to the Fleet Air Arm Museum but it seems that a personal visit to do on the spot research is needed to see what they have in respect to Record Site Plans and Building Drawings. I have no idea what is in TNA relating to WW2 RNAS airfields.

Has anyone explored this particular field.

Hi Peter,
Was on the phone to FAAM reserach library yesterday. According to the woman I spoke to they don't hold (or have heard of) site plans, or building plans and types.
I think the Admiralty just did things differently to the AM/RAF.
I do have a basic site plan of St Merryn, but it dosen't list most specific buildings and uses, but does with the important ones, and runway headings etc - just a general reference really. TNA/IWM might be better?

I have spent alot of time researching FAA aircraft in the FAAMRL and is well worth a visit.

I wonder if the louvres are original, if so it may point to a possible use. Are we sure it isn't farm related?

It is now, but appears on original plans, as does the 'meat factory'

Might have become one, the main meat processing plant was further into the living site and was based on 2 or three existing buildings joined into one.
But the building does appear on the plans (distinct in size and plan shape), it look pure war time aswel.
The gym/cinema guess seems the best stab so far.

The building in question is no.175. Also of interest was 128 (bottom centre).. This had a corrugated iron roof at a very steep angle - possibly a range? We couldn't get close to it.

In common with most RNAS plans there is no key!

Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite
