Another 'What is this thread'

While JimC and I were digging in a heap of bulldozed rubble a few weeks ago, we came upon this item. I first thought it was a flagpole sleeve, the bolts through the side to tighten on the pole and hold it steady. Now we are not so sure.




We promptly discarded it as a bit of Massey-Ferguson or John Deere, but Richard Drew on his excellent website 'Atlantikwall' pictures one on his RAF Stanton Harcourt pages.



In fact, through emails, Richard has sent me a few other images of these items. One image shows one of these bolted to a concrete block in the entrance to a shelter. Others are on top of shelters and a similar item on the roof of a control tower.
Anyone else found these items on airfields?

I was thinking gas detection posts?

Windsock mounts are usually far more substantial than that, it is surprising the force they have to handle in anything more than a stiff breeze.

Ibsley tower has one and a defence position at Culmhead to mount a gun on and the one at Stanton Harcourt sitting on a Stanton Shelter. There must be thousands more?

Could it be one of those 'Motley Stalk' thingy mounts?

We've had that suggestion Terry (posts 1&2), personally I would expect a windsock mount to be alot more subtsantial than that.

Looks like the Motley Stalk mount suggestion is the winner! Well done mawganmad.
