Going back to the cap badge, I reckon it's a R.N. officers badge. Anchor with the crown above? Also they wore stripes and badges on the base of their right sleeve. This looks like two stripes with wings(?) above. Can't make out what's above them though. Possibly a "qualification" badge or insignia. As to the "striped shirt" collar I think that it is just 'shading' on the old photo.

Just had a closer look at the pciture greatly magnified...I think it could be RNAS/early FAA uniform, the sleeve badges,an inverted chevron could be a wound stripe...the cuff Badge appears to be pilots wings and in the correct position for naval uniform///just a thought/

My initial search concluded that the cap badge is RNAS. It is the double inverted chevron on the right cuff that I cannot match but assume to be Good Conduct stripes.

FAA wings are worn on left sleeve, maybe in RNAS days they were on the other sleeve?

Was Lawrence AC Shaw when in the RAF? Always thought he was called Ross. He was Private Shaw at Bovington when he served with my garandfather.

The uniform is an RAF officers uniform from the period 1st April 18 to-at the earliset/latest 4 Auguat 1919. During this period RAF officers wore an SD hat with a laquered peak just like the Royal Navy. Officers rank badges had an eagle (or was it an albatross) above them just like the RNAS. afaik after 4 August 1919 the RAF changed the design of the officers peak and the rank badges went over to those worn today. And its an observers brevet on his left chest.

Yes he was AC Shaw. I assume he opted for a lower rank to get away from the attention but he still rubbed shoulders with the top brass. Never understood why the government of the time didn't use him to sort out the Middle East after WW1. He knew more about it than any policy maker.

He wasnt used IMHO because he was too close to the Arabs. I think many on the Jewish side such as Ben Gurion wouldnt have trusted him.
