I bet no one can provide a drawing number for this.

A drainage pipe? That's what we thought until closer inspection.

The bottom is filled with concrete and a gun mount of some description set into it. These are at Kings Cliffe, near an E pen on the southern taxy way which leads to the hangar base.

Two more can be found in situ at the south of the airfield near the BHQ and cantalever pillbox. Note metal mesh in front.

Nope not yet!

You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!

The metal mesh is American Bar & Rod tracking Noel. The mount inside the concrete section is the same type of mount as highlighted in the 'Motley mount' thread!

The action man figure in the second pic sadly is not Buzz lightyear but our very own CDP!

You beat me to it with these Noel!

Internal diameter? About four feet, thereabouts. What drew us to them in the first place (the pair in the copse near the BHQ and cantilever pill-box) was the fact that the external ground level is considerably higher than the floor and central mount.

The "exposed" pair, for want of a better expression, give an idea as to the construction of the floor - rough rubble/concrete with the internal floor skimmed smooth. Quite what the little hatch thing is, well - any ideas? There's a recess around it, indicating some sort of plate was fitted. A drain cover over a soak-away, perhaps?

Chris

PS - wasn't doing much in the way of buzzing or lightyearing that day Paul!

Could be sewer/cess pit tops with the inspection hatch, adapted for a more warlike activity. No need for expensive custom built jobs.

There are also a couple more apparently in situ at the side of one of the fighter pens just" here.

Sorry to thread hijack, but whilst discussion's centred around King's Cliffe, can anyone confirm that this " is a searchlight battery? Found it the other week whilst wandering around, but it's not on the DoB database. Pics 1 , 2 , 3 and 4 if helps?

Looks like the D/F station and an air-raid shelter, not searchlight

The structure in question is arrowed here on the 1947 air photo:

Although at first glance it appears to be an octagonal M&E Plinth, the shadow thrown in the air photo indicates whatever was inside the walls was the same height as the Blister Hangars nearby.
A DF mast could well be the explanation.

All the best,
PB
