Having had another thought, if the picture was taken from his time as director of personal services then as Ted says he would be responsible for personal services. Im guessing that part of that was welfare facilities such as NAAFIs, could it be visit to a new NAAFI somewhere? And I dont know why but the WAAF officer in the background looks familiar, maybe an actress in later life???

The strange thing is that Oxland in Carnaby's link looks nothing like the Oxland in the book I referred to. In fact I would never had made the connection with the former. I wonder if illness brought about quite a change in appearance.
The byeways we travel in this forum never cease to amaze me!

A quick Google search for RAF Hucknall reveals ,what seems to me, to be the very same hangar in the photos which started this - now has Maersk across the front of it.

Certainly looks like Hucknall to me the roof's in the background match with some there now and even looks like those huts may well be standing still beside the hangar.
