Found in Leo Lane's files. The Highball unit was at Spilsby, but where was 28 MU at the time?

What an epic discovery.

28 MU was at Harpur Hill, Buxton.

Edit: As expected, lot of extra info on Harpur Hill elsewhere on ARGL:

A nice find John. There must have been millions of Demand Vouchers made out during WW2 and, as I recall, the RAF Stores accounting system required copies to be retained for a specified period before disposal which usually meant incineration. But Highball provenance too albeit Inert version!

Re post #20 of this thread and the article about Highball trials, here are Barnes Wallis and Leo Lane's thoughts.

Stephen Flower's book " Barnes Wallis' Bombs, states Highball made by Vickers works at Crayford.

Also reference to balancing at 28MU Buxton, so safe to assume Highball stored at Buxton (Harpur Hill).

Were all of the Highballs were inert?

There were inert versions and live versions made. Cannot say which were used where for sure.

In April 1943 20 inert and 11 live were made available. The live carried 545lb of explosive.

Ref: Stephen Flowers. Barnes Wallis' Bombs

April 1943. Vickers Crayford made 20 inert and 11 live bombs. It does not state whether the live bombs were filled, or whether they were made to accommodate explosive.

Summer 1944: Highball "live" now contains 600lb Torpex.
