I assume it's not the same pilot for 36 hours! Do they have two or more pilots or is one of them called George?

It makes sense logistically for the occasional mission to the Middle East but not for a sustained campaign as reaction times would be out of sync with events.

The BLAKBUCK raids had a Victor pilot to do the in flight refuelling, so at least one of the pilots got out of the seat. As for the B52, Im guessing they did use the autopilot, but did they leave the cockpit? From what Ive heard of the B52 there isnt a crew rest area, or is there?

There was a case of "friendly fire" over Afghanistan and the cause was put down to the use of Benzidrine or as they used to called "wakey wakey"pills.

Peter: Sorry this reply is so very late; I missed your comment.

My understanding is the B52's loitered over Afghanistan carrying a mixed weapons load. In this CAS role, the troops on the ground called up a weapon drop, and specified the munition and the target. The B52 crew did the rest.
Is this called "Cab Ranking".?
It must be very reassuring to know that in any firefight situation, dramatic accurate support can wreak havoc wherever you choose. Now that has to be worth a beer!!

I assume much of the payload is now smart weapons as dropping unguided bombs from a great height may not be accurate over hilly country where the winds are apt to swirl. That function used to be the purpose of the A-10s but now they haven't got anything apart from helicopter. Seems to be a gap in the market in the CAS role.
