I wonder if that is due to ground clearance, as modern engines are much more powerful than those originally fitted to the B-52?
Will they have to have smoke pipes fitted in order to leave the black smoke trail going forward?

4 RB-211's were considered at one time, certainly ground clearance would have been an issue.

I understand the black smoke is generated by the water/methanol injection used; used to get the same with CV880s and 990s..

The USAFs 76 remaining B52s are to be re-engined with 8 x Rolls Royce F 130 engines replacing the current Pratt and Whitney TF33 engines.
