i found a complete Anderson shelter in kit form at the back of my friends garden, even had the original tool kit that was issued with the corrugated sheets. now has pride of place in my allotment, at least thats one piece saved.

Swinderby has yielded the most, (probably because it remained a pretty much unchanged class A). My most prized possession is the business end of an aircraft trailing aerial complete with AM stamped washer with stores ref number, and all the lead balls. If only it could talk.
Sadly these days land owners just won't grant permission, even with written willingness to pay and proof of extensive personal insurance.
This year alone I have been denied permission at Swinderby(!), Woolfox Lodge - (the land owner just ingnores letters), Kelstern, Bardney, Faldingworth, Tempsford, Graveley, and Bourn.
Working on a few others at the mo. Anyone know who the actual land owners are for Newton? That airfield must have a few treasures under its surface.

Has anyone got any info/stories/personal knowledge of things that have been found on WW2 airfields....
Apart from all the buildings has anyone found ( or heard) of things found as people have wandered/investigated these historic sites. Anything from UXBs ...pipemines...ammo...remains etc etc!
Mr Google obviously brings up numerous and interesting bits with newspaper reports etc but be great to find out more from you all!

This is the right time of year for searching for artifacts on airfields.
Over the last few weeks I have conbined my daily 5 mile walk with field walking, the weather has been exceptionally kind to boot!
As always, Hunsdon is my focus, for the last two years I missed out on being able to be able to walk the ploughsoil due to medical reasons. This year I have made up for it by being out for hours each day of the weekend..and occassionally after work while the light remained.
The most likely places to find aircraft artifacts are in the dispersal areas. Here the day to day servicing took place, In those days recycling was not the norm. Often parts removed were discarded in nearby ditches so it is not uncommon to find all sorts of bits and bobs lying around. Most of these can be found with the Mark 1 eyeball, the majority by metal detector. I am a great believer in the former as I do not own the latter!
Today was the turn of the location of where the aircrafts 20mm Cannon were tested. The earth bank has long since gone, in fact there is not the slightest trace of the butts whatsoever. Hundreds of rounds must have been fired off into that earth bank, but in all the years I have been walking the airfield I have never found any sign of spent casings or shells untill today. Within a few yards of the old peritrack I found three 20mm rounds and the base of a casing. Nearby where a frying pan dispersal once stood were a piece of hydraulic piping, and a thermostat probe of some sorts.
Another interesting thing about this airfield is that the hardcore for the runways and peritrack came from blitzed buildings in London. There is a great wealth of interesting items and materials in the soil here. Yorkstone, Marble, Clay and slate tile, bakelite light switches, brick of all types from blue engineering to airbrick, pottery, glass, porcelain and China. In a strange way those houses and buildings that were destroyed by the luftwaffe, came to play their part in the war by providing hardcore for the airfields to be built. Next time you are out and about, see what you can find on your local airfield..and let us know!

Well PNK, after talking to one of the locals, it turns out to be about 3 or 4 a year, also many more are ploughed up and shells are dumped then on the side of the fields, these are then picked up or blown up on site by the bomb disposal squads. Photos to follow folks.
