Can anybody explain to me why IATA have location codes when the ICAO already had them? Thanks. :?

Not too sure where you want these - anyway - a few historical additions below.

This seems to be a neglected subject..

When were these first introduced?
Does anyone have a historical list - particularly for the UK postwar years?

EGWA= Andover (defunct)
EGWO= Calshot- marine
EGIC= Chilbolton
EGHA= Previously Christchurch(now Compton Abbas)
EGUG= Gosport
EGUS= Lee-on-Solent -Superceded by EGHF
EGYT= Thorney Is.
EGWT= Tarrant Rushton

Thanks Dave, I'll add these to the list later. I started that list a couple of years ago and it got a bit neglected and then someone asked me a question about the ICAO codes, thought it was about time I did something with it!

It would be great to post them all up on the Audit, past and present airfields. and also where the codes have changed.

Some more info ......

The first are additions to the current ICAO (EGxx) format which came into use
on 1st March 1959- obviously a lot are defunct or were later reallocated

The original format introduced in 1946 used Gxxx for Civil airfields
and Mxxx for Military.

This was inline with the ITU allocations for callsigns of G for Great Britain (Civil) and M for Great Britain(Military)

When the new system was introduced in 1959 Gxxx was allocated to NW Africa (including Cape Verde Is and Canaries) and Mxxx was used for Central America and Caribean.

There were some reallocations within the Gxxx list (see below)
but so far little info as to dates.

This information gleaned from a variety of sources including
Dave Wise, Phil Butler and assorted ABiX postings....so I can't say anything about original sources.

A small thing I have remembered ...

Back in the 60s/70 I used to listen a lot to HF radio ATC ...mostly Shanwick ?NY /Santa Maria/Miami etc.

I'm pretty certain that the UK Ocean stations (weather ships) that were then in use(and used to transmit on the oceanic freqs) all had ICAO codes in addition to their titles (Ocean Station Kilo etc).

I know that now there are none left - apart from the Norwegian OS"Mike".

Can't find very much in reference to them- and nothing about their ICAO codes.
