Interesting that the same RAF grouund station has 2 ICAO codes. HQ 38 group kept the code EGDH when it moved to High Wycombe(until today I dint know RAF High Wycombe had an ICAO code), ASCOT ops at HW was(is?) EGDHRRRW.
As for Dundee, its now EGPN. Back in the early sixties it was a field used by the Logan construction company when they were building the Tay bridge.
Hi,
I was reading the mails in this thread, and I noticed mention of "EGQR". For a period this was Arbroath (HMS Condor), home of a Commando unit., and whilst latterly it could only take helicopters, it could at one time take DC-3s, Devons, etc. (Dundee was badly damaged by flooding and out of use for a while).
Now I've got your attention (zzzzzzzz) I have some possible candidates for as yet undiscovered ICAO codes:
Catterick, Chelveston (USAF to March 62), Chetwynd, Mersey Radar (RAF Hack Green circa 1964), Little Staughton (which wasn't little, big runway for USAF until early 62), Peterlee, Portreath, Sopley, Watnall Radar (RAF) (was near Nottingham). I also thought that RNAY Sydenham had a different code from Belfast City.
Also what was EGUU in 1961-65 was it Anglia Radar, or was the teleprinter hub somewhere else then?
Thanks to all who have contributed to this icao codes thread, the file thus produced is a great resource.
I've been working on 1960 visiting aircraft logs for Speke Airport, using records transcribed from the ATC Logs at that time.
Observations and a few ICAO indicators to add into the list, Richard - all in use 1960:
EGAA was Nutts Corner (till 10/63) then all ops moved to Aldergrove (however EGOA was in use for RAF Aldergrove in 1960)
EGAC was Sydenham, then Belfast Harbour, only now is Belfast City
EGBF was the 1960 in use code for Derby/Burnaston
EGCE was Tatenhill (appears regularly as base for Ind Coupe's Dove), so was code was in use before Wrexham/Borras. (Tatenhill now EGBM)
EGGL in 1960 was referred to as Lulsgate at that time (Bristol now EGGD)
EGGK was Blackbushe (now EGLK)
EGGR was Squires Gate, Blackpool - appears very frequently (now EGNH)
EGGS at the time was Ronaldsway, IoM - appears very frequently (now EGNS)
EGGT at that time Woolsington (Newcastle now EGNT)
EGLI was Biggin Hill throughout 1960 (now EGKB, indeed is EGKB on a 1962 code list)
EGLN was Luton, first noted in use late 1960 (see EGTJ)
EGLW surprised to find that Battersea Heliport was in use as early as 1960, as at the time there were few civil helicopters around
EGNE was Yeadon (now EGNM, while EGNE now Gamston)
EGOL Silloth
EGPF Renfrew (till 6/66 when all ops moved to Abbotsinch)
EGTJ Luton (freq use early/mid 1960, then changed to EGLN late 1960 - now is EGGW)
Other codes in use, to which I've not found a translation for in other 1960 sources:
EGFD appears a number of times, presume somewhere West Country/South Wales
EGOR (speculate this to be a Lancashire former military airfield, used by Westair (of Blackpool) Dragon Rapide and a BKS B.170 Freighter)
EGTS
EGIA
EGIB
Not a one-way information street, there were a couple I didn't know on your master list eg EGIC and EGII, so many thanks.
As Newcastle is in Scottish FIR it should actually be an EGP ICAO designator. As for EGOR, my guess is either Warton (now EGNO) or possibly Samlesbury.
A little premature with my post this-afternoon. From the person who originally transcribed the 1960 Logs in 1960:
EGFD is Staverton. This works for me, as EGFD in the logs only there, in use, for the first 4 months, for the last 3 months of the year EGBJ is used - the current code for Staverton. Which neatly puts the year of change squarely in 1960.
EGIA is Bembridge, which by early 1962 was EGHJ
EGIB is Bognor Regis, a company owned private field, which by early 1962 was EGKC
EGOR could well be a hand-writing transcription error for the quite logical Blackpool (at that time EGGR).
EGTS could also be a transcription error, but no easy solution. Only referred to once in the whole year of movements
The 'base list' from which I am working with the 1960 logs were written out early 1962. Comparing the 1962 and 1963 (more clearly presented) with the 'master' list on AIX shows a great number of differences/additions. Now I've started I'm in for a long post:
EGBC Bitteswell in 1962 & 1963
EGBD is down as Boston, not Burnaston (which is there as EGBF)
EGBG called Leicester East
EGBH Rearsby - at that time the Auster/Beagle factory airfield
EGBL is called Wolverhampton, not by a local name!
EGBM referred to as Tatenhill (same Ind Coope base as in 1960 was EGCE)
EGCM from the very start in the 1960 logs Ringway was already EGCC, so if right, EGCM predates the 60s
EGDO Pershore
EGDS South Cerney
No EGC* codes in the early 60s, so all listed post-date this period
EGFB Filton
EGFD (see top of this post)
EGHB Exeter (pre-dates EGTE)
EGHF Southampton Water (Lee-on-Solent listed as EGUS)
EGHI Eastleigh (was EGII in 1960)
EGHL Chilbolton (was an EGI* code in1960)
EGJC St. Helier (this in addition to EGJJ Jersey)
EGLN Luton (now EGGW)
EGLR Woodley
EGMF Ramsgate
EGNJ Birkdale Sands (noted as EGCO on the AIX master list)
EGNK Hesketh Park (an adjacent piece of beach to Birkdale Sands)
EGNQ Scunthorpe
EGOJ Jurby (very active with Anson C.19 comms flts to/from Speke in 1960/1961)
EGOU High Ercall
EGPJ Machrihanish
EGQH Abbotsinch (presumably a military station there to be EGQ* coded? Civilian EGPF at Renfrew on same 1962 & 63 listing
EGQO Ouston
EGQR Arbroath (makes more sense than Dundee for 1962 as Dundee opened mid 60s as EGPN from the start)
Run out of time - I'm only a little over half way through! I'll tackle EGSA onwards as a separate post.
