Yes Ive heard that as well. It must have been an odd form of occupation in the Channel Islands. Churchill is supposed to have said "let them starve" when told of the plight of the islanders, but its not known if he was referring to the islanders or the Germans. As the Vega was allowed to dock I suspect he was referring to the Germans.

Having looked at a few Manna/Chowhound photos it looks like the RAF flew much lower that the USAAF and some were really low. Was this the case of is just the USAAF photos showed more of one flight that was quite high?
I know that many RAF squadrons practised a lot before the actual Manna missions but can't find much on USAAF preparations. May have to see if there is a book on the subject.
