Airfield identification in a film

Thank you for your help gentlemen. looking at the links to web sites that you suggested, it does look as though it was RAF Ludham in the film as well as Ludham village for one of the other locations.

Sorry am a little late to this thread gents but I was pretty sure that the main airfield shooting was further afield...somewhere like Leconfield perhaps.

After doing a little research - I am now certain that the main airfield scenes were shot at leconfield...this helps...

I was at RAF Leconfield in the early 50's when the airfield shots were taken. The aircraft used were the Meteor 7 & the Vampire T11 Trainer. I was in one of the T11's as armourer. We did several 'circuits and bumps' with the cameras rolling. I very nearly made a mess all over the cockpit, but did just manage to contain myself. The film team were on site for a few days and we had to carry on working as normal whilst the filming was being done.

I made a very brief appearance as I crossed the set with a bomb trolley train, so still have a copy of the film on VHS.

Hi Baz. Thank you for that info, very interesting. Was all the equipment/vehicles etc, Leconfield`s own or did they bring in any extra items from other stations, and did they change any of the vehicle registrations as far as you know?

I dont know any details Nick,I had a little look at parts of the film yesterday and I doubt that all the airfield scenes were shot at Leconfield,but I think that the close up aircraft servicing,hangars and taxying aircraft scenes probably were leconfield.
The control tower scene with the controller talking to the landing meteor seems to have a double bay hangar in the distance,so probably not Leconfield,amd maybe closer to Ludham etc,my film copy was recorded from Ch4 so not the clearest quality LOL.
I doubt they would have bothered to change vehicle reggies !!

After I had asked you the questions it occured to me that some shots would have been done elsewhere.Typical film makers.Anyway, it is still a nice piece of aviation history from the early 50s,especially as it is colour.

Yes I agree - a lovely snapshot of the time...
And the lovely muriel did look rather nice in a swimsuit LOL

On looking at the film again Baz, most shots at Leconfield are done there and a few of the indoor shots were proberly studio shots with painted in backdrops through the windows.I agree about Muriel, a real dish.

On Prune,an ex RAF pilot says that the finale flying scene was shot at Horsham St Faith,and I have seen Langham and Ludham airfields mentioned as being very close to the main locations,there is a ground scene (Swifts) with the station master and sqn ldr in a landrover parked in front of a Tower...does the Tower match Leconfield ?

I am the widow of a pilot that flew one of the vampires in Conflict of Wings . I remember my husband coming home one day ( RAF Leconfield) and telling me he had landed his vampire and of course the film was cut while the actor climbed into the cockpit and then filming resumed as he climbed out. !!I obviously still have my husbands log book with the hours and dates entered under "film" Enormously valuable to me as he was killed in a mid air collision before the film came out Would love to be in touch with anyone who could chat to me about those times Cilla
