I was looking for the RT callsign for Christchurch. I assume that in common with Winkton, Christchurch would have had one at least during the USAAF time there. Can anyone help?

Many thanks for the photo of Christchurch tower, Norwichpaul. I have published Christchurch for FS9 but no tower 'cause the plans dont show one! Now I have the last part of the jigsaw (apart from the airfield R/T callsign)!!

As they say here in a very snowy NW Durham, "You're a goodun, thats what I call a response!"

Now, at the risk of being called a prat I ask you the following question. What did stations & associated crews use the various call signs for? When trying the get to the bottom of the call sign mystery I rang [recently] The Bomber Command Association & it was, the phone call, hard work. If the bloke knew what a BC radio call-sign was he wasn't about to tell me.

What do you think Mr OB, please let me know?

These were the tactical callsigns used by aircraft and the ground station for operational identification ....

So for instance an aircraft talking to Hurn in 1944 might call as Blue 2 and talk to "RUMPUS".

A similar system exists today , for example the USAF may use a callsign such as QUID91 (a KC135) - who , when on HF may talk to a ground station such as "DRAINAGE"(altho' in many cases real names such as Croughton are used)..UHF/VHF ops will sometimes use similar system or the ground station may use it's "proper " name such as Fairford approach or London (airways).

The only thing we have so far there is a partial list of aerodrome 2 letter codes in the thread linked below - but it is only for a couple of dozen airfields.
