I still cant work out how some airfields ended up in the minor airfields document. Take for instance Panshanger.

I think the clue here is that this is an RAF Document, Panshangar would be, like all of them in there a 'Minor' airfield to them, it is not going to take anything fast or large which would be the majority of the RAF Fleet. It also has Minor facilities, if any facilities in some cases. Hence Minor Airfields.

So why is Woodford in it???? As I have said I was an AATC/FOA so I dealt with all the RAF flight planning documents and I dont know the rationale for an airfields inclusion, later editions during my service had quite a few microlight strips included.

As for selling of out of date ones, that was stopped. A light aircraft crashed and out of date documents were found in the wreckage, so we got orders that all out of date maps, charts, documents and tap charts were to be binned.

What a pathetic over-reaction. Were these documents ever relevant to the crash? I regularly take ancient 1 inch to a mile OS maps airborne (marked with Q sites etc - you can't memorise the location of everything) All pilots know that they are responsible by Air Law to carry an up to date air map, read Notams/whatever, but there is no law that states that one can't carry dated articles as well. Do we need to develop a self-destructing Pooleys? This country is going to the dogs etc...I'm off to the Daily Wail!

I often wondered why I kept on crashing... that old Aerad flight guide I used to carry around was the culprit.

Whilst agreeing that pilots are responsible for carrying up to date charts documents in the absence of such having a reasonably recent flight guide to hand can be useful for planning unforeseen diversions, or even just for interest - the latest critical operational information is on tap from the FIS.

Most printed charts and guides would be out of date at the time of publication becoming more so as the time passed before the next reprint - errors and updates notified through the AIP and Notams. Presumably electronic guides are more responsive to changes.

But back to the Peter's thread - I happen to find historic airfield charts interesting.

I'm already falling behind on my promise to post each map diagram due to pressure of work (don't ever retire!)
I will set aside the first hour after breakfast tomorrow to scan some and then post in the evening.

Somewhere in my collection are a couple of FLIPs for Middle East and Asia and another for Europe, both mid-70s.

Don't the electronic ones just work to the same monthly cycle as the paper ones?

Charts, maps, plans, concrete and a good supply of home-made bread, cheese and good wine/beer. Who needs more to while away the days!

Ossington. It may seem an over reaction to you, but that was what we were ordered to do by 1 AIDU, and you know what the Armed Forces are like when it comes to orders. I also wonder what the CAA had to say on the matter, or maybe the coroner?
