Couldn't resist putting these up - RAF Binbrook The Last Lightning Airshow August 1987
English Electric Lightning F.6 XR769 - this aircraft crashed into the North Sea 11 April 1988 following an engine fire.
There is a picture of the aircraft on fire shortly before crashing in the book, The Last Of The Lightnings on page 102. Luckily the pilot survived after ejecting.
Phantom XT870 - The last F.4 to fly off HMS Ark Royal
I went back to Binbrook a couple of weeks ago and stood on the last remains of the runway. As I stood looking out on the
approach I thought did what I saw in 87 actually happen as all was now so quiet and deserted. It seemed a world away from
the frantic activity a quarter of a century ago. Time is a strange thing blink and its gone and everything has changed.
