The list and small report compiled by me in 1996, is on AiX under the First World War Historical Research Lists, Carnaby's list is annoyingly similar, allegedly researched by someone else.
You can tell a builder from an archaeologist by the size of his trowel. Mine is a small one!
Re the 'magazine' Excuse the thread drift but the magazine features as a pre-existing structure to that under discussion and can muddy the understanding of the latter.
Paragraph 6 has the Ministry has the War Department building the magazine in 1898.
When I first saw the Barlby magazine it reminded me of the Victorian structure at the Llanion Barracks in Pembroke Dock, (though there are many significant differences).
If it was email I could just attach it but failing that - copy this into google. Only two references come up - its the first - download it and it should all open fine - my copy does.
I'm struggling to find that archaeological report, The link posted by dbusfield wont open (leads to a PDF?) and Carnaby's link just goes to the ADB site from which the search function struggles refusing to filter. I assume that the report is archived?
Can someone give a direct link to the report PDF please?
Thanks Graham but it is still a problem. Not the link, which is valid I think but the document (PDF?) shows downloading but freezes and never completes. I got it the first time last week and saved it but when trying to open found it corrupted.
I shall keep trying. The irony is that I could have read it on line first time but tried to save it for later!

My name is Colin, based in Dublin, Ireland and my primary interests are in HF communications, military aviation and photography.
My main reason for joining this group is to learn more about military airfields in the UK, in addition to the various communication sites that exist and have operated over the years. At the moment I am trying to research the history of the old communications centre located at Birdlip (Winstone, The Cotswolds) especially in view of its connection with our vital North Atlantic Communication Centre at Ballygirreen, Co. Clare (near Shannon Airport), radio call-sign "Shanwick".
I have monitored the North Atlantic aeronautical HF communications since the 1960's and indeed, still continue to do so on a daily basis. I have created a blog covering this aspect of my hobby, (see below), which I am continuing to develop on a regular basis. Hopefully some of you may find this of interest.

I will now review the various threads on your site and look forward to possibly making posts in the future. Needless to say, if anyone can provide any information in connection with Birdlip, or any aspects of UK based HF communications, I would be delighted to hear from them!
