The descision to bring back much of the Army from Germany is already in the plans long before the current review was initiated. Several units now occuppy the former RAF innsworth , canberra what we knew as PMA got the chop. The drafters etc moved to Hi Wycombe and virtually everything else comes under JPA joint personel management which is controlled by civvies from the former army records office at Glasgow. The current plan is that Everything from Cosford will move to the Defence Academy at St Athan a full BAOR Brigade will move into Cosford; ideal nice big airfield to play on plenty of vehicle storage and motorway and rail link on the door step. There is a problem bringing tracked military vehicles into Scotland. During exercises at Leuchars it was a virtual no no for the CVRTs of the EOD team to cross the public road from the airfield to domestic site. THe recce boys of the TA yeomanry based in Cupar who also operate versions of the CVRT have a severe restriction on vehicle movements due to some bye law or other.

Regards the debate on Radio four, yesterday, tuesday I heard of it what I could. Plenty of talk about the coming war, a cyberwar and the use of UAV's and how scrapping the Tornado would cost more than keeping it alive.
Now that does scare me on many levels, and you don`t need billion pound assets to bring a country to it's knees. A few smart script kiddies in the pay of a determined foe plus a little blackmail and bribery here and there and things could go horribly wrong horribly quickly.
The proliferation of interconnected "government sanctioned" databases and the vast number of "officials and professionals" (sic) allowed access to them on the grounds of "the public good" is courting trouble.
OK so this thread is about airfield closures - but ultimately it's all about threats to the national security and cyberwar is right up there.
Back in the early nineties MOD did indeed look at moving all the army from Germany to UK, it was vetoed because there was then nowhere for them to be based in the UK. Even a place like Burtonwood was looked at as a base for a tank regiment. Yes I know that some tanks may be placed in storage, but if theyre in storage there must also be the possibility of moving them from that storage. And how do you move tanks around? Yes on low loaders, and try moving them on the roads around most RAF stations.
Needs must when the devil drives. To hell with big tank transporters on little country roads when you have no money to spend on new construction. Tree-huggers beware - the Oshkosh HETs are on their way!

Last month when NP and I were prowling around Salisbury Plain, we couldn't fail to notice that many of the tank crossings were being renovated.. The aim seemed to make them more obvious from the road. H&S strikes again? We felt the money could be put to better use.

Plan A is always more effective when the problem you are working on understands that Plan B will involve the use of dynamite
Anyone read the Daily Mail this morning? According to them the Navy will get the carriers, but the Harriers will be American! So does that mean the Tornados are safe? Also says that there will be no "spy planes" and well rely on Americans for all that. Nice idea but what about say another Falklands? The current American president isnt that keen on Britain at the moment is he?
The more closed airfields then the more HM Prisons can be built. I understand there is a shortage of prison places? Problem(s) solved - unless you bring back hanging for almost every offence!!
