Historic Aerial Photo Resources

I had a look at the Kent Explorer site and noticed that the 1946 aerial view differs in some areas to the version on Google Earth and luckily for me the Kent online version shows the direction arrows at Littlestone BR and Leysdown which are not visible on the GE version. It looks as though the GE one might be an earlier version with poorer quality photos in somme areas. I haven't checked but I think it also shows more AA sites than the GE version and may go further West.

I have just tried a search on Leysdown and it worked okay for me. I wonder if it is due to your IP address? I tend to home in via the map as I find a lot of searches frustrating on some websites.

The error must be related to Android. My tablet PC wont work it but no problem with Windows OS.

It seems that ukaerialphotos.com has gone! At least none of my bookmarks work and Google doesn't return anything. Shame as it had coverage that Google didn't use in their 1945 layer covering much of the South East and Southern England with a large chunk of the Midlands. Although the online view had a logo it was able to be zoomed into further than the Getmapping on screen version.

The downside was that the quality of the purchased aerial photo was little better than the on screen version (1945 version) and as a high resolution scan from Historic England was the same price there is no comparison, apart from the fact that you had to identify the relevant frame and sortie for the latter.

It was another of the companies affected by the 123-reg debacle (great to be able to use that word in context!)

Perhaps it will return.

I just checked on the debacle and for the companies that are affected I would say it was a catastrophe! I'm surprised they didn't have a backup they could switch to in the event of problems. Since the problem occurred on the 18th May I dare say many of those affected will struggle to get going again. I also suspect that there will be no compensation for those that lost money. Just reinforces how fragile the web can be.

A month later and the site is still not back up! This is most annoying as it had 1940s coverage not available elsewhere, that I wanted to revisit. A search reveals nothing recent about UKAERIALPHOTOS so I assume the flick of a programmers wrist has put it out of business?
