Britain At War Magazine

I was going to buy it, until, reading on, I realised it was a chunk lifted from Chapter six of "Britains Military Airfields 1939-45" by DJ Smith (PSL Ltd 1989 ISBN 1-85260-038-1) which itself was condensed from Aviation News articles years ago. An excellent read, well worth the £14.95 I paid in 1989.

Like many views on Scotland and Northern Ireland it's much better in Bing .

I think I'm allowed to plagiarise my own material but I did update it! Most readers will not have read the 1982 original. Pity I didn't know about the expansion station planned near Colchester.

In your book, in the airfields that never were list, you mention a "proposed expansion aerodrome on former Army camp site" at Cannock Chase. Do you have any further details of that? I live not far away from the Chase and have a shrewd idea which site it was but it would be nice to have it confirmed.

That's about all I know about that one, I'm afraid. I may have noted it from Hansard but I can't remember. I would have thought the Chase was too hilly for an airfield but you'll know it much better than I do.

In general Cannock Chase is too hilly but there was a WW1 army camp just to the S.E. of the village of Brocton. The road from that village rises to a gently rolling plateau and the [very large] camp was there. I think the site would have taken an airfield in the 30's - the camp,as far as I can tell, was about one mile by one and a half miles in area. Fascinating to think what might have been there in WW2. The Chase bombing range was in that same area.
I wonder if the planners switched to the site at Lichfield - the timing would have been about right. Hixon is closer but that, of course, came later.Mustn't forget Penkridge either albeit that's a different scale.

Hmm maybe I'll skip it then. David's book was one of the first airfield related books I bought and that chapter was one that caught my eye. It inspired me to do my own research and I found 3 more sites in Gloucestershire that almost became airfields.

I was mostly curious by the articles title and wondered if they'd lifted anything from our own thread.

I see that Britain at War magazine has been bought by Key Publishing:

That will be the end of another good magazine, Flypast group is mostly aviation only, not general military topics, and most of their stuff is revisionist rubbish, have not bought Flypast for years. Ranger
