Whilst looking at the use of the Otterburn tactical ranges (Redesdale) I noticed a comment that the Phantom was not allowed to use gunnery due to the spillage of unfired rounds. I assume this was because these rounds would fall outside the live area but still inside the danger area. Was this a Phantom problem and if so why wasn't it solved before service? The date of this was 1971.
No Amount Of Evidence Will Ever Persuade An Idiot (probably not Mark Twain)
The problem with the Phantoms gun AFAIK was such that it wasnt allowed to use the air to ground ranges in the UK. It was allowed to use the air to air ranges as they are over the sea. I believe that the problem only occured with the gun pod and not with the internal gun.

I don't think the Phantom had an internal gun, hence the reason for the gun pod.
ISTR Raymond Baxter fronting a TV programme sometime in the early 70s that included a Phantom shooting up old vehicles somewhere on Salisbury Plain. A 6 Sqn machine carrying a SUU pod, I believe. I was told years later that it could only be used on the centre-line pylon as the wings flexed too much to use the outer points.
