The dearth, or even death, of flying ex-RAF Phantoms is due to the fact that their engine was the Rolls-Royce Spey, and RR no longer support the Spey. 'Elsewhere', Phantoms had the original American engine, which is less of a problem.

The Thunderbirds and Blue Angels operated their F4s solo. Were British (or any other nations come to that) Phantoms cleared for single seat operation?

Regarding single-pilot operations, there were occasions when the back seat was occupied by someone being given an official 'joy ride'. It is unlikely they could be trusted to do any serious flicking of switches in routine or, even, emergency situations, so I would suggest that this equates to the pilot being on his own.

Does anyone know what happened to the Phantom reconaissance pods? The last ones I saw in 1977 were in the corner of the former 4 sqn hangar at RAF Wildenrath

No, but they probably went the same way as the Canberra 20mm Gun Packs.

Wasn't the kit re-packaged for the Jaguar's recce pod?

XV 435 outside the fire section at Llanbedr, which was cut after October 2004 when the airfield closed,I think the cockpit was saved but not 100%.

If that was a 92 Sqn Phantom why is the tail red or has the blue gone "funny"?

For whatever reason, 92 Sqn. went with red tails rather than their previous blue Lighting-era ones when they operated Phantoms.
