That programme was called "skywatch" and was supposedly a live programme. Yes the Phantom was using its gun, I wonder if it got special clearance? Or was it a myth that it wasnt to be used on overland ranges?

Due to the size of the area I think Salisbury Plain (Larkhill/Imber) were the exception, providing the appropriate clearance was given. Noisy Nora's were an example of the special permission. Salisbury was difficult to use on a regular basis due to the problems with airways in the area. I suspect the safety trace specific to Phantom, i.e. the back area needed to be larger, was easily accommodated here. Most air to ground "academic" firing was done on coastal ranges, firing seaward. The only inland firing was on the tactical ranges and the Larkhill "exhibition" ranges. The tactical ranges were probably Redesdale/Otterburn and Sennybridge (were there others?) in the Seventies and both would have used mixed realistic targets.

Yes, it was "live" in 1974; I remember watching it as it was broadcast. It was repeated later during a working week and I remember closing my ESA for business so that my guys could see the effects of what they were dealing with on a daily basis. The gun (SUU-23) in its CL pod was part of the Ground-Attack role, pre-interceptor, so I think that the use of air ranges only should be myth - no benefit to be gained from trying to hit a banner.

Oh, and just for fun, extracts from the programme are available here:

Enjoy and dream of the past.

Was the inland range use limitation because the gun installed in the SUU spat out live rounds as the gun cleared when the trigger was released?

No direct knowledge of any such limitation but, as an ex-USAF colleague would say, "we have a parallel thought-process".

I note that I used the term 'trigger' Silly me; I should, of course, have written 'fire committal switch'

Hi all.
I believe that the Phinal Phantom Phlight in the UK (sorry, couldn't resist that !) was at RIAT at Fairford, a couple of years ago. It was a German aircraft.
