Air Ministry Works Department - Works Repair Depots

The Louth AMWD is listed as number 10 Upgate,Louth-I cannot remember the details but I believe that the property numbers were changed after the war...As an aside an old pal of mine had served throughout the war in combined ops. with a chap from number_ _ _ Upgate.My pal was part of the Triumph motorcycle racing team and visited Cadwell Park as part of the Transatlantic Trophy competition...He decided to look up his old comrade,knocked at the door and explained who he was to the chaps wife....She just said he was dead and slammed the door in his face !

I have a little more in the way of clues to suggest that the above site might be more suitable than the one mentioned in posts #81 and #84.

The postal address was Callerton, Kenton, Newcastle-on-Tyne 3 and this site is only just north of Kenton.

If this is the case, what was at NGR NZ 19030 70338, I wonder?

This address was for the local Section Officer.

When I search for that NGR I get a site near ESHOTT.

I used SEARCH for other posts with the name Callerton in the post content and came up with none!

I had a look at Darlington and sadly Old-Map isn't working for me today for some reason. However right at the bottom of the GE 1945 coverage of Darlington is a likely site at NZ 29443 12325. It is woodland now but was possibly a works of some sort and utilised during wartime. NCAP have an oblique from 1949 that touches on that area but is not clear enough to be sure.

DARLINGTON was AMWD No. 23. It was classed as a major depot.

I'm inclined to agree with your NGR reference, as the postal address for the unit was Blackbanks Lane, Neasham Road, Darlington.

Neasham Road is the main road from NW to SE in this link wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm

You will note that there is a reference to Blackbanks to the SW of the probable site and I would suggest that Blackbanks Lane, therefore, is possibly a continuation of Snipe Lane, which passes by the depot.

On the 1933 OS Map, from Old-Maps, the site shows an Engineering Works, disused. On the 1957 OS Map from Old-Maps, the site is shown as a depot.

Darlington ;
The Darlington southern bypass , the A66 , cuts this site in half and Snipe Lane is easily found and seen on GE . There is no Blackbanks Lane but there is a Black Banks Kennels to the south and west and I have put the site on my 'to do ASAP' list !
