This post is great as I’m including Altcar in a book I’m writing on the US Army in Liverpool. Can you tell me what the sources are for the images, please? I haven’t come across them on Fold3 as yet. Thanks, Euan
Thanks, Peter. I've been using Fold 3 extensively, but hadn't come across the aerial photo unfortunately. I usually go a few pages either side of the section of interest. Turns out here I didn't! It's literally the page after I'd stopped.
Just out of interest, have you ever compared the official unit locations on Fold3 to Phil Grinton's lists? I've found there are some significant variations.
I had trouble loading that image to the forum and mistakenly typed G-305 instead of Q-305.
As with many entries in Fold 3 referring to US Army establishments different names for the same place occur usually because different individuals in the field at that time used different local names. There is one POL map which does not show 'Altcar' but 'Ormskirk' yet I believe they are one and the same..
Like many sites, I think FOLD3 do a trial free subscription where you sign up and get free access for a period.
Also like many sites they tend to give free access around the equivalents of our Remembrance Day and some other holidays - ANZAC Day in Australia / NZ, Canada Day.
FOLD3 has a huge range of information and files but a very poor search system. Also annoying when you find a 100 page wartime file but have to save every page, one at a time and then put them into one PDF.
