It may just be me being thick, but I am a bit confused.

I was looking at the WOODHALL SPA thread. The Latest post from Gypsymoth is #1, and the original post by Richard Flagg is from 7 years ago (and some).

When a new post is added does it become #1 and all the earlier ones increment by 1 ? If so any references in text to previous posts will become muddled as the posts will all change number each time a post is added.

Or do I need to get out more?

Regards Ian

I don't really know what is happening as earlier all threads seems to contain non consecutive post numbers but now they are consecutive within each post with the latest being number 1.

Could it be something to do with me using latest post first and if it is referring to post numbers would be meaningless?

No, it's my fault! Having read your comments earlier, I switched the method of post numbering, however I didn't realise it would do what it has done. If the forum was switched back to last post first (which I hate BTW) the the number would be as it was in the old forum.

Would you like it switched back again (the numbering that is)?

You could just hover your cursor over the thread post number and you will see the real database number - that doesn't change.

It may be just me but I do often refer to post numbers in a thread and if the latest will always be number 1 then all previous posts will keep changing number.

I did notice the "real" post number but as this is not thread specific would it not be a problem for post referencing?

I also thought that the post reading order was up to the user and can be changed in preferences.

Yes you can change your own reading order.

Personally my vote would be the first post is #1 and the last post is either the number in the sequence or a tune on a bugle.

It will be ;less confusing for all if the post numbers don't change.

Thanks Ian

The trouble is, it's user definable. I can set the default either way, but it will still be user definable. If the numbering is switched to 'post number' rather than 'post in thread number' as it was before I changed it an hour so ago then any reference will always remain regardless of thread post ordering.
