Shouldn't the post order (user definable) be independent of the post number - the visible one not the hidden one?

If the visible post numbers change then they are irrelevant and serve no purpose.

That's kinda been my point all along. The post number you currently see is the order number according to your view and gives the user an indication of where he is in the thread. The Real ID number is the only number that is independent of view order. It is the serial number that is specific to that post and never changes regardless of where that post goes. Equally, it doesn't change when other posts are deleted or moved.

I have had the forum set to show the Real ID a few days ago, but that wasn't well received.

The issue as I see it is inter post referencing the simplest way to that is to right click on the post number (it doesn't matter if it is showing Real ID or order number) and then copy and paste the resultant URL. That way the referenced post is directly linked rather than just typing "See post 3 in this thread"

In the Matching concrete pads thread the copying of the same post link address produced different results, sending the clicker to different locations in the same thread and not to the correct post except in the case of the person who created the link.

It looks as though the copied link must use some sort of post ordering but using the same post number. However after a recent test it has stopped happening but was was originally causing the problem was some extra text "limitstart=0" in one and "start=120" in the other but both ending with the correct post number. All those using the same post order as the creator of the link succeeded in getting the correct post but those using the other post order will not.

As it now seems to have been fixed a little more testing is required to confirm this is consistently working or else remove the necessary text if it appears when copying post addresses.

I'm not sure I follow Peter,

I just right clicked on the post number of your post and a clicked 'Copy Link'. This is a paste of that link:

www.airfieldresearchgroup.org.uk/forum/n...on-this-forum#126865

The '#126865' number on the end of the link is the Real ID number of the post that stays with the post regardless of the number order.

It's not doing it now but it was yesterday. The two links I posted in the Concrete Matching thread were my version and Kebecker's of the same link and both contained the extra bit of code which seemed to override the actual post number. No idea why though.

To summarise:

Each post has a unique ID number that stays with the post and is normally not visible under current forum settings.
Post ordering default setting is set to First post First in each topic however this can be changed by the user to Last post first.
The post number the user sees is just the sequential number according to how s/he has the numbering order set.
If you want to refer to a particular post in a thread don't type in the post number, right click on the post number and copy the link (don't copy it from your browser address bar).
Then paste the link in your post.

Simples!

I have a question for Bigbear regarding

www.airfieldresearchgroup.org.uk/forum/n...96-seething?start=60

I tried to edit my text (in post #66) but was unable to do so, getting the error message:

Error
You have to many links in your message, please decrease it!

Is there a restriction as to how many pictures one can upload per post? I can see my edited text in the "Preview" but after clicking "Submit" I find that it has not 'taken'. I've tried three times without success, then gave up. Can you advise, please?

PS - Just tried editing the above text and it worked just fine.
