Post Numbers on this forum

Personally my vote would be the first post is #1 and the last post is either the number in the sequence or a tune on a bugle.

It will be ;less confusing for all if the post numbers don't change.

Thanks Ian

The trouble is, it's user definable. I can set the default either way, but it will still be user definable. If the numbering is switched to 'post number' rather than 'post in thread number' as it was before I changed it an hour so ago then any reference will always remain regardless of thread post ordering.

I've just switched it back to real post number. By referencing these numbers the referencing will never change regardless if the user has last first or first first.

This thread keeps appearing and disappearing..... ( edit Ah it is just at the wrong level)

Like Richard I have often referred to a post by its number in that thread, in the thread itself, something like "See post #61 above"

Its not about the post number in the database, that may be important to the DB Manager, but its pretty irrelevant to a user

It may be just me but I do often refer to post numbers in a thread and if the latest will always be number 1 then all previous posts will keep changing number.

I did notice the "real" post number but as this is not thread specific would it not be a problem for post referencing?

I also thought that the post reading order was up to the user and can be changed in preferences.

Where are the preferences please? - I'm feeling a bit Australian with everything upside down!

Click on your name to take you to your profile. At the right hand end of the green bar that contains the words Profile for PJH you will see a little white edit button,

The problem is this forum gives the user too much choice. The post ordering is user definable so if you were to make a reference to post number 5 as you see it with your settings set to First Post First it might be post number 26 in my view which is set to Last post first.

Thanks Peter - I'd missed that. Back in UK orientation now!

I preferred the 'Old' system where the most recent posts were the last in the thread. To me it was more logical, when scrolling through - and downwards - to follow the history of the postings that way.

You have the option to change to that view Chris, through your profile settings.

Click on your name. This will take you through to your profile page. You will see a thin green bar running across the screen. At the left end of it is written "Profile for Christheancient" at the right hand end you will see the word "Edit". It allows you to change you profile settings. Click on the tab that says "forum settings" you then have a number of options that you can change. One of which is Post ordering. Change that setting to first post first and you will have the 'old' view again.

Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction.

I had looked in the 'Profile'... but, being thick, I didn't spot the "edit" button in the corner!

I also like the "Thanks" button addition. I am a member of another forum (not RAF or airfield orientated!) that has that facility and it is a nice, quick and easy way to express thanks to other people.
