And one of the reasons for the abbreviation of the callsign is the fact that on a flightplan you can only put 7 characters in the callsign box.

Struggling to decipher entries in a TNA ORB. The Air Ministry were very keen on abbreviations, which were often local to a particular site.

1) Three defence posts were set up and manned with 8.L.A sights for ranges located on outlying ground. Three defence posts were set up and manned with eight LA sights for ranges located on outlying ground.

8.L.A - any ideas.

2) Blenheim aircraft de-bombed, four 250-lb GP NDTs removed
32 x 500-lb NDT bombs dropped
16 x 500-lb bombs on each aircraft (SAP on one, NDT on the other).

3) Ten Vegs arrived from Priddy’s Hard, marked PDM
1 aircraft took three 500-lb bombs, 10 Vegs in, 50% PDM

Any ideas PDM. NDT. I've got feedback from PeterTheEater, but we're not completely convinced.

No mIdea, but could a Wellington really carry 16 500 pound bombs? I doubt that every much.

I assume the 8 in 8.L.A. is not a "B"? Not that it helps much. ORB abbreviations would make a good list maybe we could make post No.1 the list and updated from subsequent posts?

My version of NDT can't apply here - NON DESTRUCTIVE TESTING :)

definitely an '8' Peter.
I was thinking too about a 'master' list, but not quite sure how to implement it.

Just to amplify Carnaby's post.

Vegs (Vegetables) was the codename for air dropped mines as used during 'Gardening' operations.

Priddy's Hard was the name of the Royal Navy's ordnance store on the Gosport side of Portsmouth Harbour.

EDIT: I'm in contact with Priddy's Hard Museum; awaiting response.

That was my initial suspicion - 'No Delay Time' etc, then again they might call it 'Inst'.

PTE suggested 'NDT probably means No Detonator Tail, i.e. nose fuzed only.'

Another possibility.
