Is that the sound of a can or worms being opened...?
For me, I'm glad people have made the financial contribution they have, but I too don't think its money well spent. It's an awesome aircraft, unique now as it was then and harks back to a time when bombers were still needed, and it was cheap enough to build one without having to resort to a consortium of nations to make is feasible.
The aircraft makes an incredible noise and, cliche or not, can be flung about the sky like a fighter.
I'll be sad to see her pensioned off at the end of next season, but I won't be sad to see the end of the begging emails every few weeks. I hope the VTTS team can put their efforts to something else unique, but a little more affordable. I'd like to see something from the cold war era, but also, I think the airshow circuit needs a Mosquito...
Having seen it perform many many times over the last 40 odd years I can say there is nothing like it for looks and noise. I doubt I will see it again but I am pleased others have an opportunity to it fly. At least it is not public money that is being used pay for it. Still all it would take is the price of one of those overpaid prima-donnas that only work for 93 minutes a week to cover the cost for a few years.
No Amount Of Evidence Will Ever Persuade An Idiot (probably not Mark Twain)
All the Vulcan has to do is simply land at an airfield & hundreds of people arrive beforehand lining the perimeter fences & verges just to catch a glimpse. No other aircraft attracts this much attention from both the general public & enthusiast these days (with the exception of the Canadian Lanc recently obviously). You only have to see how many people go home after the Vulcans displayed at airshows to realise how popular it is.

One day at Scampton in the early 60's Princess Margaret came to present new colours to 27 Sqn. As part of the show we fired off 20 + aircraft in a few minutes , the noise and smoke was unforgettable. The earth trembled! Compared to that, one Vulcan is pretty tame.
A three ship (or was it four?) scramble at the Jubliee Review at Finningley in 1977 was pretty impressive. However it was the only aircraft I know that set off all the car alarms at Biggin Hill one year. Not often you hear a thousand car alarms go off at the same time. All those people running back to turn them off
We turned ours off before we got there.

In "Avro Vulcan" by Andrew Brookes there are plans showing various Vulcan proposals for the post Skybolt era, including the 3 Gnat fighters. The Gnats were to take on the Soviet air defences in enemy airspace after which "they were expected to land 'in friendly territory' or return to the Vulcan to replenish their tanks from a specially installed flight refuelling drogue". And the best of luck too!
Then of course perviously, there had been the Avro Atlantic civil proposal complete with ladies room, lounge and bar!
