Your nearest airfield?

Used to be Bovingdon, where I played as a kid. When the RAF left in 68, so us kids moved in, well as soon as we were able (prob about 1970). The only aircraft resident then was a Mk IX Spitfire, stored in one of the T2 hangars. I remember setting up shop in the control tower, which then off course was in prestine condition as were all the buildings, I also remember at school during a cookery class in 68, when came the raw of piston-engined aircraft flying over head, which off course were the 'German AF' plus a mitchell en-route somewhere from Bovingdon during the filming of the B of B. I never actually got into the site during filming, only viewing from the road. We also found a Halton pannier in the woods of Berlin airlift fame. Some time too in the early 1970s I had a girlfriend who said 'lets go to Bovingdon airfield', so we duly walked to the village from Hemel Hempstead and instead of going to the familiar airfield she took me to the communal site. I could't believe it for here was a complete new, almost a derilict town-like site with water tower and masses of buildings. This off course was my first introduction to dispersed sites. I would walk there (to the airfield) or go by Rover bus at least once every couple of weeks after school (for about a year or so), when we walked the quickest way was through the back of the airfield, where it was easy to climb the fence, past the reservoir, and on to the tech site via one of the runways. We had to be careful too as the site was patrolled by a caretaker who did catch us more than once. We learnt his routeen and avoided him most times though. Later in 1978, during the filming of Hanover Street (I was 21 then), access was easy and we joined the film crew, even queing with them to get some food.. We would sit by the active and watch the aircraft take-off, taking pics every so often. By this time there were very few buildings on site and the control tower was very run down. That was my last visit to Bovingdon, but I am sure it was this experience in my youth that set me up in my job as a military archaeologist. By the way has anyone seen the RAF Bovingdon mosaic, dating from the 1960s on one of the shop walls in HH town centre - I never did get a pic of of it and I wonder if its still there. I think its of the control tower.
