Well here in sunny Leicester the nearest to me is the old Braunstone aerodrome which is about 10 mins away. Once home to the No7 Elementary Flying Training school with tiger moths and Crilly airways with fox moth's and Dragon's. The site is completely unrecognisable now as its completely covered by an industrial estate however one hanger does remain used for light industry. The old airmens rest pub which stood at the original now overgrown enterance to the airfield was sadly demolished two years ago.

Also nearby is the former Desford airfield (Braunstone was a satellite to Desford during the war). Home to various flying schools with many Tiger moths plus Hawker Harts, Prentice's, Austers etc etc. Sadly what was once a lovely grass airfield with 1930's style buildings etc has now pretty much dissapeard underneath the big factorys for the Catterpillar Tractor company. However they do use some of the original buildings including the hangers which still have the anti collision lights on the roofs.

Nearest active airfields are Leicester East now owned by Leicestershire Aero Club (who actually owned and ran both Braunstone and Desford before the war) and a bit further away is the massive former USAF Bruntingthorpe airfield now home to the last flying Vulcan xh558 which i saw coming into land last week. Awesome!!

First post on this equally excellent and informative forum.

I live on what would have been the final approach to one of Woodhall Spa's runways and a short drive away is Coningsby and East Kirkby.
